Baul Meets Saz is a trio born from the thunderbolt musical encounter of Emre Gultekin, Belgian Saz player of Turkish origin, Malabika Brahma and Sanjay Khyapa, practitioners of Baul philosophy and musicians of Indian origin. In the year 2016, Emre Gültekin met Malabika Brahma & Sanjay Khyapa, an outstanding duo of traditional musicians, who perpetuates the tradition of Baul music during a recording session of the duo in Brussels. Emre (Saz and vocals), Malabika (vocals) and Sanjay Khyapa (dubki, dotara) felt immediately the possible connections between the saz and Baul music which lead to the Baul Meets Saz project.
They are both musical and spiritual : repertoires, similarities between the communities to which they belong, nomadic way of life, and echoes they found in their poetry and philosophies of leading life. Thus was born the idea of the album “Namaz” released in summer 2018, which is a tribute to the values shared by these two cultures. The longing to express and spread the unification of two ancient traditions and culture in- spires them to overcome the barriers of geo-political borders and to reach out to the world which initiated the seed of the next album in making.Their music is a sheer reflection of their way of life which questions borders and follows the path of humanity and love.
Based in Brussels the trio is currently traveling the world with their repertoire featuring great musicians of diverse genre (like Vardan Hovanissian, Tristan Driessens, Nathan Daems, Robbe Kieckens...) presenting unique live musical moments.
The cd “Namaz” brought them critical appreciation where as the concerts generated a dedicated audience who perceived the mystic connections through this music.
Songline Magazine has announced Namaz to be on their top of the world list of albums 2018.
it is featured consecutively on Transglobal world music Chart since its release ranking on the first 8 albums. The album is being played in radio and television channels like Mondophon auf Radio ARA, rtfb.be & Klara, Concertzender Nederland.
The band released their second BANJARA from UREN Production in October, 2022.
