The band Chapulines plays a unique interpretation of son jarocho. This is a traditional Mexican music genre from the south of the state of Veracruz. Son jarocho emerged in the colonial period when indigenous, european, african and arabic music traditions were mixed. Chapulines is also strongly inspired by rhythms and sounds from the Caribbean region, like Cuba and Colombia. These influences can be heard in their own compositions, which they alternate with songs from the traditional repertoire.
The band Chapulines was formed in Mexico at the shore of the beautiful lagoon of Bacalar after a musical meeting between singer and Jarana player Beto Robledo Zaragoza (MX) and violinist Graciela Zaera Moraña (ES). Back in Europe, the group was completed with Antoon Kindekens (BE) on percussion and Dennis Nicles Cobas (CU) on double bass. They have been playing concerts together since late 2019 with Ghent (Belgium) as their home base.
